A Note From Our Founder

Dear Friend,

This business grew out of a simple wish.

When I opened Small World Goods in 2022, I wanted to fill the shop with beautifully made, seasonless clothing that truly honored its makers, the planet, and the people who wore it. The more I searched, the clearer my vision became, with minimal designs meant for every day and every decade. This vision slowly grew into Dear Friend.

A lifetime immersed in making clothes, from sewing my own in childhood to years in theater costume shops, gave me the foundation to create the designs I dreamed of. Decades living in and exploring South and Southeast Asia introduced me to the people making so much of the clothes worn around the world. And Small World Goods shop became the testing ground where every Dear Friend design was worn and refined through customer feedback.

Dear Friend's production is rooted in Nepal, where I've spent years building relationships with the women artisans who hand craft each piece. Our makers hand spin the yarn, hand-loom and hand-dye the fabric, and sew each garment by hand. Our knitwear is entirely hand knit, using no machines or electricity. These artisans are truly amazing! We're able to provide work to women at our main studio in the Kathmandu Valley, at home while caring for their families, and in smaller studios around the Valley. We pay the women directly, not through their husbands as is the norm in Nepal. This work creates fair, dignified livelihoods for women with limited opportunities.

Dear Friend honors the difficulty of garment work, and the pride and artistry that come when workers are treated with fairness and respect. I want to bring this to people who care about style, comfort, and the world at large. What drives me every day is the belief that fashion can be beautiful without being wasteful, ethical without being exclusive, and deeply human from start to finish.

With Love,

Bibi

Our Ethics

Ethical fashion can mean many things. For us, it begins with people.

Every Dear Friend piece is produced through carefully built relationships with artisans in Nepal. Our partners use foot-powered looms and traditional craft techniques to create fabrics and clothes that honor centuries of cultural heritage. They hand dye each batch of clothing, creating unique differences in each piece that contribute to the perfectly imperfect beauty of handmade clothes. They even make the paper for our tags and boxes from the local lokta shrub, a kind of paper handmade in Nepal since the 12th century.

Many global companies avoid investing in Nepal because of its fragile economy. We see extraordinary skill, resilient communities, and cultural traditions worth supporting.

We are hugely inspired by the style and sustainability of vintage fashion, and are very proud to go beyond that environmental sustainability into craft sustainability and economic sustainability of underserved communities. Because we use only natural fibers and low-impact dyes, our clothing will biodegrade and return to the earth, where synthetic fabrics persist for centuries. By choosing to create new garments with marginalized artisans, we are also helping to sustain traditional craft practices, create stable livelihoods for women, and celebrate the artistry of  handmade work.
